Course offered: GENERAL NURSING AND MIDWIFERY  (GNM)

INTRODUCTION:

General Nursing and Midwifery it deals with the education of nurses in general health care, nursing, and midwifery. Nursing is a profession within the Health Care Sector focused on the care of individuals, families and communities so they may attain maintain or recover optimal health and quality of life.

Nurses care for individuals of all ages and all cultural backgrounds who are healthy and ill in a holistic manner based on the individuals physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, social and spiritual needs. The profession combines physical sciences, social science and technology in caring for those individuals.

Indian Nursing Council believes in concept of Health laid down by World Health Organisation (WHO) “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

In order to provide qualitative Nursing Care there is a need to train nurses effectively to work as a team member of health care delivery system. It is therefore their training should involve positive attitudes, knowledge, skills, professional expertise, latest trends in health care and health care needs of the community and the country as a whole.

The Council believes that it has a responsibility in helping the students to develop pride in their profession besides keeping them abreast with current knowledge and professional trends for a successful career ahead.

The course is of a short duration which can help you to make career in a short span of time. After successfully completing these courses you will become a “Nurse”.

After the successfully completion of the GNM course, there are a various higher study options like, Pc. B. Sc Nursing, M. Sc Nursing & Ph. D Nursing eventually.

Nursing Career has unlimited Job opportunities. Nurses can get jobs easily in both government and private sectors. Mostly they work in areas like government and private hospitals, nursing homes, old age homes, orphanages, various industries, sanatoriums, armed forces, ICU nurse & Infection control nurse.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

Minimum education eligibility criteria for admission to GNM:

  • 10+2 with English and must have obtained a minimum of 40% at the qualifying examination and English individually from any recognized board. Candidates are also eligible from State Open School recognized by State Government and National Institute of Open School (NIOS) recognized by Central Government. However Science is preferable.
  • 10+2 with English having 40% of marks in vocational ANM course from the school recognized by Indian Nursing Council
  • 10+2 with English having 40% of marks in Vocational Stream-Health care Science from a recognized CBSE board/State/Centre
  • Registered ANM with pass mark.
  • Admission of students shall be once in a year.
  • Students shall be medically fit.
  • Minimum age for admission will be 17 years. (as on 31st December of that year) The upper age limit is 35 yrs. For ANM/ for LHV, there is no age bar.

FOR FOREIGN NATIONALS

  • The entry qualification equivalency i.e., 12th standard will be obtained by Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi. Institution, State Nursing Council will be responsible to ensure that the qualification and eligibility will be equivalent to what has been prescribed as above

ATTENDANCE:

A candidate shall be eligible for the admission to the state Council / Board examination if the Principle of the school certificate that:

  • She / he has completed not less than eleven months of the course
  • A candidate must have minimum of 80% attendance (irrespective of the kind of absence) in theory and practical in each subject for appearing for examination.

The diploma shall not be awarded to the student till she / he has completed the clinical / field requirements.

  • A Candidate must secure 50% marks in internal assessment separately in each theory and practical.
  • The record of practical experience is complete.

(The Principal shall send to the Council / board the internal assessment for each subject, i.e. both theory and practical (S) before the start of the examination along with the examination form).

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Sc Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing is an undergraduate Nursing course. Nursing is a healthcare profession focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life from conception to death. During the course it is taught the nurses that how to work in a large variety of specialties where they work independently and as part of a team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care. Nursing science is a field of knowledge based on the contributions of nursing scientist through peer reviewed scholarly journals and evidenced-based practice. The duration of the course is four years but it depends on institute to institute as per their rules. The value of the course is an immense and it is job orienting in nature. The course is being provided by many colleges throughout the country.

OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Nursing as a career is really lucrative not only for women but also for men. Due to fast expansion of health-related industries, there is a hike in the need for nurses as well. New hospitals are coming up rapidly. There are multi-specialty hospitals that are always in the need of specialized nurses in various disciplines.
  • People who have undergone nursing degree programs and are having degrees in nursing are in high demand. One should remember that higher the degree in nursing, higher is the specialization amounting to a higher salary as well.
  • After successful completion of Bachelor of Science in the field of Nursing, the graduates or the candidates can either work as a nurse in a good reputed hospital or clinic or take up higher studies such as Masters in Nursing after their Bachelor’s:

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  1. Passed the two year Pre-University examination or equivalent as recognized by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, with science subjects, wise Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  2. Obtained at least 45% of the total marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology of the qualifying examination. If belonging to a scheduled Caste or a scheduled tribe, should have obtained not less than 40% of the total marks in science subjects and English of the qualifying examination.
  3. Students of Vocational Courses: 10+2 vocational course of State Government of Kerala with 5 subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English in addition to vocational subjects conducted is considered equivalent to +2 Examination/Karnataka Pre University course form the academic year 2005-06 and onwards. Marks obtained by the candidate in English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology to be considered for assessing the eligibility as per the ordinances governing Basic B.Sc Nursing course of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences vide Notification No: RGUHS/SEF/EC.B.Sc Nsg/191/2005-06 dated 18.05.2006.
  4. Candidate should have completed 17 years on or before 31st day of December of the year admission.
  5. Candidate shall be medically fit.

ATTENDANCE:

A candidate is required to put in at least 80% attendance in theory and practical subjects separately in a recognized institution approved by and affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka. The candidate shall complete the prescribed course satisfactorily to be eligible to appear for the respective examinations
